Wholesale price of cashew nuts drops to ` 140 per kg

Tonnes of cashew nuts have begun arriving at the wholesale purchase counters in Canacona taluka, with the wholesale rates dropping from Rs 170 to Rs 140 per kg.

CANACONA

On average, about 40 tonnes of cashew nuts are sent to three different wholesale purchase counters, including the Sahakar Bhandar at Chaudi.
Sources at a wholesale purchase counter informed The Goan that cashew nuts had earlier originally commanded a rate of upto Rs 170 a kg due to lower supply of cashew nuts.
Most of the main wholesale purchase counters had received only a few tonnes of cashew nuts during the last fortnight and the rates continued in the range of Rs 160 per kg, with a few private counters offering upto Rs 170 per kg.
“However, the flow has increased over the past few days with daily
cashew nuts brought for sale sometimes touching over 10,000 kgs a day at some private wholesale counters. The Sahakar Bhandar counter has begun receiving 20,000-30,000 kgs of cashew nuts a day and given the scarce availability of godown facilities at the yard, it has to be transported on a daily basis,” informed a source.
With the increased arrival of cashew nuts, wholesale prices dropped to Rs 140 a kg on Monday.
Besides the purchase counters at Chaudi market yard, cashew nuts are also purchased in smaller scales at various shops in the taluka.
